Active and Safe Routes to School
In 2015, as the newly-appointed Chair of Public Works and Infrastructure, Councillor Robinson introduced Toronto's first comprehensive, City-wide Road Safety Plan (RSP) based on the international standard, Vision Zero.
Since then, the Councillor has worked diligently to refine and accelerate the RSP. One major component of the RSP is the Active and Safe Routes to School Pilot – an initiative Councillor Robinson fought to implement for schools throughout Toronto. The Pilot officially started in 2018 and aims to increase student participation in walking and cycling to school by promoting safe travel options.
The Pilot includes road markings, sidewalk activities, pavement stencils, and increased signage in school communities. Specifically, each of these measures acts as a tool to encourage children to walk or bike to school, reduce vehicular speeds, and improve safety.
The project is led by Toronto Public Health and Transportation Services, with support from Bloomberg Philanthropies' Partnership for Healthy Cities and Ontario Active School Travel. This year, staff are expanding the program to three new schools across the City.
