Strengthening Regulations for Rental Apartments

In 2017, the City of Toronto launched RentSafeTO – a coordinated strategy to improve the regulation of maintenance standards for purpose-built rental apartment buildings in Toronto.

Under the current program, Municipal Licensing and Standards (MLS) officers conduct regular inspections of all rental apartment buildings and issue a score to the building owner based on the results. RentSafeTO also gives the City the authority to issue substantial fines of up to $100,000 to landlords who are not in compliance with the bylaws.

In December, City Council took steps to strengthen the RentSafeTO program by requiring building owners to inform all current and prospective tenants of their scores, as well as post their waste management plans on the tenant notification board.

As your City Councillor, I will continue to support stronger regulations on apartment building standards for tenants across Ward 15.
