Status Update — Dormant Construction Sites

Municipal Licensing and Standards (MLS) is currently undertaking a multi-phased review of the Property Standards By-law. As a result of my motion at the Planning and Housing Committee last year, I am pleased to advise that safety and security measures for dormant construction sites will be considered as a priority in the first phase of the review.

While this is a positive step forward, the City's property standards by-law is only one piece of the puzzle. As I wrote in my November 2021 newsletter, the Ontario Building Code must be significantly amended in order for the City to properly regulate inactive construction sites. On that note, I am expecting an update from Toronto Building on the City's conversations with the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing about this issue in the coming months.
