Road Safety Updates

Since I was first elected, road safety has remained one of my top priorities at City Hall. As the former Chair of Public Works and Infrastructure, I introduced the City's first-ever comprehensive Road Safety Plan (RSP), Vision Zero, last term.

Since the RSP launched in 2016, we've expanded the program scope and implemented Vision Zero measures in neighbourhoods across Toronto, including many in Ward 15 – Don Valley West. To-date, the City has installed over 1,100 Community Safety Zones, 352 School Safety Zones, and more than 1,500 signalized improvements. In Ward 15, I've worked closely with our local communities to reduce the speed limit on over 150 local streets, initiate neighbourhood-wide traffic reviews, and implement targeted safety improvements.

This term, we also saw the implementation of Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) – a critical tool in our RSP that I fought for over many years at City Hall. In 2018, I moved to lift the decades-long moratorium on the creation of new Community Safety Zones to reduce aggressive driving and speeding in areas with higher concentrations of school children. This was a critical step forward as Provincial legislation requires ASE to be implemented in designated CSZs. Now, the City's 50 ASE devices are active in school zones across Toronto and City staff are planning to further expand the program in priority areas.
