Road Safety Updates
25 New City-wide Automated Speed Enforcement Devices
Earlier this year, City Council voted to expand the highly successful Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) program by approving the purchase and installation of 25 new units – bringing the total to three per ward.
In Ward 15 – Don Valley West, the newest unit will be located at Harrison Road, near Vernham Avenue, until it is re-located as part of the regularly scheduled rotation. The existing ASE cameras in the ward are located at Overlea Boulevard, east of William Morgan Drive, and at Fenn Avenue, north of Gordon Road.
Studies have shown that if a pedestrian is struck by a vehicle travelling at 80km/h, the risk of a fatality is 90%. At 59km/h, this risk is reduced to 50%, and at 30km/h it is all but eliminated.
Implementation of Leading Pedestrian Intervals in Ward 15 - Don Valley West
The Leading Pedestrian Interval (LPI) program increases the visibility of pedestrians in intersections by providing them with an advanced walk signal to begin crossing prior to the green signal. In other jurisdictions, LPIs have been a critical element of many road safety plans.
Three new LPIs will be installed in Don Valley West at:
The north-south crossings at Davisville Avenue and Mount Pleasant Avenue
The west-east/east-west crossings at Manor Road and Mount Pleasant Avenue
The west-east/east-west crossings at Belsize Drive and Mount Pleasant Avenue
You can learn more about LPI installations on the City's webpage, here. To suggest an LPI location to Transportation Services, residents can call 311 or email 311@toronto.ca.
