RentSafeTO
In 2017, City Council approved RentSafeTO – a strategy to improve the regulation and enforcement of maintenance standards for rental apartment buildings. Under RentSafeTO, Municipal Licensing and Standards officers carry out regular building inspections of common areas and issue scores based on observed deficiencies. All landlords for rental apartment buildings with 3+ storeys or 10+ units in Toronto are required to register with the program.
Last December, I voted with City Council to strengthen the RentSafeTO program and improve transparency for residents. Now, building owners are required to inform all current and prospective tenants of their scores. In addition, the City recently launched an interactive webpage where residents can view and download RentSafeTO evaluation results, which were not previously posted online. You can find more information on the RentSafeTO program at www.toronto.ca/rentsafeto.
