Road Safety Updates

ASE Update

As your City Councillor, improving road safety has remained one of my top priorities. In my capacity as Chair of Public Works and Infrastructure last term, I led the implementation of Toronto’s first-ever Road Safety Plan and Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) program. I also moved to lift the decades-long moratorium on the creation of new Community Safety Zones (CSZs) in school areas. This was a critical step forward as Provincial legislation requires ASE to be implemented in designated CSZs.

Currently, the City has access to 50 ASE units – 2 per ward – which are rotated to different CSZs on a 3-6 month basis. Data has shown that ASE cameras have successfully lowered excess traffic speeds in school zones by as much as 12 km/hour. Transportation Services is now exploring options to expand the ASE program to additional priority streets.

Traffic Studies Have Resumed

Transportation Services is now resuming traffic studies and working to clear the accumulated backlog. Over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic, traffic volumes across the City dropped by an estimated 56% during peak hours. As a result, Transportation Services temporarily suspended all traffic studies requiring vehicle volume counts. New study requests can be made through 311.
