Don’t Feed Them! Wildlife in the City

This spring, the City launched a "Don't Feed Wildlife Campaign" to educate Toronto residents about new changes to the Animals By-law.

As of April 1, 2023, feeding wild animals – including coyotes, foxes, raccoons, and skunks – has been prohibited in Toronto. This initiative protects both animals and people from the serious impacts of feeding wild animals. Not only is human food is very unhealthy for wildlife, but animals fed by people become conditioned to expect food rather than rely on their instincts. For more information about the campaign, please visit the City's webpage, here.

In parallel, the City is working with rescue groups to implement humane control measures in areas with large pigeon populations. As part of a new pilot, a pelleted food that acts as a contraceptive is being used in four locations to decrease the population by an expected 50% annually.
