Toronto's First Biodiversity Strategy
From the trails of Wilket Creek to the ravines of the Lower Don Parklands, Ward 15 is home to many parks and green spaces. As snowfall begins to cover the trees, it's a great time of year to enjoy the natural beauty our City has to offer.
Natural environments and green spaces improve the livability of a city in countless ways. Aesthetically, they beautify our neighbourhoods, making Ward 15's communities even more attractive places to live. But the environment around us also serves an important function in the City's biodiversity.
Earlier this year, the Parks, Forestry, and Recreation division, in consultation with City Planning and the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA), introduced Toronto's first Biodiversity Strategy, which aims to support healthier biodiversity and increase awareness of nature across our City.
While the Biodiversity Strategy is an important initiative to protect Toronto's natural environments, the results must be tracked and monitored to ensure we are responding to constantly evolving environmental challenges. At the October City Council meeting, Councillor Robinson brought forward a motion directing staff to report back annually on ward and division-specific updates as the strategy unfolds. Her motion was adopted unanimously by Council.
The Councillor's motion also aims to better inform residents on the City's efforts to enhance and preserve Toronto's unique biodiversity through consistent updates.
Protecting the environment remains one of Councillor Robinson's top priorities. You can learn more about her ongoing efforts to protect and enhance the environment here and here.
