From Green to Greener: Upcoming Restoration Plantings in Ward 15 Parks

I am pleased to announce that this fall, the City will be planting almost 2,000 native trees and shrubs in three Ward 15 parks to help increase the urban tree canopy, improve biodiversity, restore the native plant community, and prevent soil erosion. These restoration plantings will take place in the following parks:

  • Sunnybrook Park: 327 trees and 355 shrubs

  • Wilket Creek Park: 295 trees and 685 shrubs

  • Sherwood Park: 115 trees and 125 shrubs

Studies have shown a direct correlation between the well-being of our City and the strength of our urban forest. In 2018, a study conducted by Urban Forestry estimated Toronto's canopy to include over 11.5 million trees, which provide numerous benefits worth more than $55 million annually, including pollution removal, avoided runoff, and energy savings.

Ward 15 is home to one of the densest tree canopies in Toronto and these restoration plantings will allow us to continue strengthening one of our greatest natural assets.
