Reporting Tree By-Law Infractions
The City of Toronto's by-laws prohibit the injury, destruction, or removal of (1) all City-owned street trees and (2) private trees with a trunk diameter of 30cm or greater without a valid permit. Where construction is taking place, protected trees must be placed within a City-approved Tree Protection Zone (TPZ).
If you are concerned that a tree has been injured or removed without the proper permits, staff have advised that the most efficient way to notify the City is to call 311 and report a potential tree by-law contravention.
If the contravention is happening in real-time, it is important to note that for the operator so that Urban Forestry can triage the call and prioritize the inspection.
