In April, the General Manager of Transportation Services submitted a report to City Council on the division's response to January's major snow event. As you'll recall, Toronto received an unprecedented 55cm of snow in just 15 hours.
In this report, Transportation Services laid the framework for a new Extreme Winter Weather Response Plan to improve the City's response to major storms, which will be developed over the coming months and presented to City Council next year. However, staff committed to implementing key elements of the plan in time for the 2022-2023 winter season, including improvements to streamline service delivery.
As we continue to observe the impacts of climate change, City staff are advising that extreme weather events may become more common in the years ahead. Now, more than ever, it is critical that staff learn from this experience and use this opportunity to implement a robust response plan that enables City crews to respond quickly and effectively to major snowstorms.
